Lygia Pape in a nutshell

In 1947, the Brazilian artist Lygia Pape joined the Rio de Janeiro-based Grupo Frente. This group was dedicated to concrete art and geometric abstraction. 12 years later, however, Pape's image of concrete art had changed: Together with Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, she signed the Manifesto Neoconcreto (1959). The manifesto gave rise to the neoconcrete movement - it rejected the ideas of established concrete art and believed that its art should actively involve the viewer. Pape is thus considered a key figure of neo-concretism.

With her serial, geometric woodcuts, Lygia Pape refers to craftsmanship. She started with the first Tecelares in the 1950s, but developed the term for it only in the 1970s. It can be loosely translated as »weaving« and alludes to her unique, artisanal approach as well as to the influence of international modernists. The woodcuts were first shown at the third São Paulo Biennial in 1955.

Lygia Pape quotes

»My concern is always invention. I always want to invent a new language that’s different for me and for others, too. I want to discover new things. Because, to me, art is a way of knowing the world, to see how the world is, of getting to know the world.«
