The artist Ruth Orkin

  • American photographer and filmmaker who flourished in the 1950s.
  • Her best-known work, »American Girl in Italy,« was her breakthrough.
  • She was one of three filmmakers nominated for an Academy Award in 1954.

Ruth Orkin was an American photographer and filmmaker who grew up in Hollywood as the daughter of a silent film actress. She was born in Boston in 1921 and later studied photojournalism at Los Angeles City College. Her most famous work, American Girl in Italy (1951)-in which model Ninalee Craig marches through a crowd of men gazing at her, some admiring, some sexualized-helped her break through.

Beginning in 1943, Orkin earned her living by taking baby pictures and working as a nightclub photographer. Soon she was working as a photojournalist for magazines such as Life, Look, and Ladies' Home Journal. She also attended summer music classes at Tanglewood, a music rehearsal and concert venue in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. There she had the opportunity to photograph such accomplished musicians as Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Serge Koussevitzky. After joining the Photo League in 1947, she participated in their exhibition This Is the Photo League (1948-1949).

Her American Girl in Italy was taken while she was traveling for Life magazine. She worked on the series Don't Be Afraid to Travel Alone. She reportedly met her model the night before at a hotel in Florence. The two reportedly decided to explore the city for a feature on a woman traveling alone. A year later, Orkin returned to New York, where she starred in The Little Fugitive, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1954. Her future husband and director Morris Engel was also involved in the movie.

Ruth Orkin taught photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1976 to 1978 and at the International Center of Photography in 1979. Among her later successes were the coffee-table books A World Through My Window (1978) and More Pictures From My Window (1983), whose evocative titles reveal what is inside: Orkin regularly photographed from the window of her New York apartment overlooking Central Park, capturing special events such as concerts, parades, and the marathon. Orkin died in January 1985 at the age of 63.

This Is the Photo League (1948–1949) teil.

Sie arbeitete gerade an der Reihe Don’t Be Afraid to Travel Alone.
