Remains

This work explores how processes of decay and transience can be translated into photographic image-making. The starting point is the theme of “food waste.” Fruits, vegetables, and other foods that are discarded in large quantities by retailers and wholesalers form the basis of this series.

The food items are placed directly onto light-sensitive photographic paper, creating so-called lumen prints. Traces of the material are immediately imprinted into the image.
Because the works are not fixed, they remain changeable and continue to react to light. The decay of the food and the transformation of the photographic material are reflected in the image processes themselves. Transience, transformation, and temporality thus become central themes of the work.

The version shown here is a scan of the original and has been permanently preserved as a fine art print.

This work explores transience as an image-making process. The scanographs reveal fragile, almost painterly structures in which forms appear as fleeting traces.

Light, time, and movement during the scanning process result in shifts and dissolutions within the image, pointing to the constant transformation of form and material.
