"Probably painted in the early 1820s ... [plate 333] depicts an adult bird in the foreground, with a young bird nearby reaching for a Luna Moth. They are in the midst of some vegetation by a little pool" (Low, p. 170).
Engraving with hand-coloring, etching, and aquatint, dated 1836, on watermarked J Whatman paper dated 1836, with margins. Plate size 524 x 556 mm (638 x 865 mm sheet). (Hard vertical crease 2 cm from right edge, some very pale toning to right margin and a few trivial spots). Matted and framed.

Auction result well in line with expectations
In May this year Christies in New York held the auction The Private Collection of William S. Reese: Part Two, which included the work Green Heron by John James Audubon. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of USD 20,000 - 30,000, the actual price achieved of USD 20,160 (€ 18,787) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John James Audubon achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work in June 2018 with an auction result of USD 9,650,000 (€ 8,264,109).
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Im Mai diesen Jahres führte Christies in New York die Auktion The Private Collection of William S. Reese: Part Two durch, in der auch die Arbeit Green Heron von John James Audubon zur Versteigerung kam. Der Schätzpreis für das Kunstwerk wurde von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit einer Spanne von USD 20.000 – 30.000 angegeben, der tatsächlich erzielte Preis von USD 20.160 (€ 18.787) konnte den unteren Schätzpreis somit knapp übertreffen. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John James Audubon erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit im Juni 2018 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 9.650.000 (€ 8.264.109).
