Totanus Melanoleucus
Depicts a pair of Greater Yellowlegs sandpipers on a riverbank in East Florida, with houses visible on the far shore. The painting was probably done in late 1831 or the first half of 1832; the birds are in winter plumage. Low, p. 162.
Engraving with hand-coloring, etching, and aquatint, dated 1836, on watermarked J Whatman paper dated 1836, with margins. Plate size 377 x 532 mm (634 x 960 mm sheet). (Pale toning and a few stray spots, outside of plate.) Matted and framed.

Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%

This artwork by John James Audubon achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in May this year. In the The Private Collection of William S. Reese: Part Two auction, the work Tell-tale Godwit or Snipe (i.e. Greater Yellowlegs) sold for USD 12,600 (€ 11,742) - well above the upper estimate of USD 6,000. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John James Audubon achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work in June 2018 with an auction result of USD 9,650,000 (€ 8,264,109).

Dieses Kunstwerk von John James Audubon erzielte im Mai diesen Jahres bei Christies in New York einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion The Private Collection of William S. Reese: Part Two wurde die Arbeit Tell-tale Godwit or Snipe (i.e. Greater Yellowlegs) für USD 12.600 (€ 11.742) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von USD 6.000. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John James Audubon erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit im Juni 2018 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 9.650.000 (€ 8.264.109).
