This artwork by John La Farge achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in December 2011. In the American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture auction, the work Red Hollyhocks sold for USD 1,874,500.00 (€ 1,444,924.07) - well above the upper estimate of USD 700,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John La Farge; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Last Valley--Paradise Rocks sold at auction in November 2000 with the realized price of USD 2,096,000.00 (€ 2,410,858.06).
