Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of Philip Bartholomew (1690-1729), three-quarter-length, in a red coat and white stock, standing in a landscape, pointing to a church beyond by John Wollaston was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 2,750.00 (€ 3,156.04). Other works by John Wollaston have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in January 2006 by the work A Portrait of a Lady at USD 5,400.00 (€ 4,441.52).
