Artwork auctioned at nine times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait of a young girl in a white dress, seated on a cushion (i); portrait of a lady (ii); portrait of a young woman in profile, before a landscape (iii) by Oliver Messel was worth GBP 9,375.00 (€ 10,337.46) to a buyer in September 2020. This price was achieved in the auction Snowdon: A Life in Art and Objects at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 1,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Oliver Messel - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Mrs William "Babe" Paley (1915-1978), which sold at auction in September 2020 for GBP 23,750.00 (€ 26,188.24).
