The actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII on horseback in the role of Soga no Goro, signed Toyokuni ga, toshidama seal, good impression, colours and condition, wormhole repair in lower right-hand corner, traces of previous mounting to back; an egoyomi surimono of Hina dolls in a box, signed Shinsai, good impression and colours, slight soiling; and three other surimono including a Meiji period copy

In May 2008 Christies in London held the auction Japanese Art and Design, which included the work Unknown by Utagawa Toyokuni II. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 1,500.00 (€ 1,908.07), 25% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Utagawa Toyokuni II achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Ichikawa Danjuro in a pleasure quarter scene in December 2021 with an auction result of GBP 21,420.00 (€ 25,549.57).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 25 % übertroffen
Im Mai 2008 führte Christies in London die Auktion Japanese Art and Design durch, in der auch die Arbeit Unknown von Utagawa Toyokuni II zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 1.500,00 (€ 1.908,07) und damit 25% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Utagawa Toyokuni II erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Ichikawa Danjuro in a pleasure quarter scene im Dezember 2021 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 21.420,00 (€ 25.549,57).
