The artist Amedeo Modigliani

  • Often referred to as »the last Bohemian«.
  • An artistic loner who cannot be assigned to any current.
  • Paintings with high recognition value; often copied and forged even during his lifetime.

At the age of 14, Amedeo Modigliani dropped out of school and began studying art at a painting school in his native Livorno. His interests lay in nude painting and Renaissance art. For further study, Modigliani, who came from a Jewish bourgeois family, moved to Venice a few years later. There, at the biennials, he came into contact with new art movements such as Impressionism and Symbolism. In 1906, in his early 20s, Modigliani finally settled in the art capital of Paris, where he deliberately lived in poor conditions − in his eyes a necessary sacrifice for art.

Serious illnesses that had accompanied Modigliani since childhood continued to plague him. However, this did not stop him from leading a life marked by excessive alcohol and drug consumption. He was in regular contact with numerous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brâncuşi and Diego Rivera. In the midst of the crucible for avant-garde art, Modigliani developed his personal style, which was influenced by the study of the Renaissance as well as the new movements. The mixture of cubist forms and indigenous African art, which among other things arrived in Paris as looted art in the course of colonialism, combined with influences from Renaissance painting determined Modigliani's unique style.

He sought a timeless, supra-cultural beauty. His intimate nudes and portraits are the basis of his current fame, while he met with little approval from contemporary collectors and critics, for whom, for example, the depiction of pubic hair was a breach of taboo. In the meantime, he also worked as a sculptor for a few years, remaining true to his typical style, but had to give this up again for health reasons.

In 1916, the art dealer Leopold Zborowski took Modigliani under contract and supported him financially. Even though Modigliani could not live from the sale of his works, he was highly respected by his colleagues. When he died of tuberculosis in 1920 at the age of 35, a large mourner's congregation gathered at the funeral, including many famous artists such as André Derain, Brâncuşi, and Picasso. Modigliani's works inspired more and more collectors in the following years, so that today he is one of the most expensive artists of all time.

Amedeo Modigliani in a nutshell

Amedeo Modigliani is one of the most expensive artists on the auction market. His relatively small oeuvre is in high demand. Almost a third of his works cost more than $1 million. Even simple drawings sometimes fetch prices of over $600,000. His most expensive work is the painting Reclining Nude, which changed hands for $157 million at Sotheby's in New York in 2018.

Modigliani was plagued by illnesses such as typhoid fever as a child and as an adult maintained an unhealthy lifestyle marked by drug excesses. In 1918 he contracted tuberculosis and died of the consequences in 1920. He lived to the age of 35.
