Salvador Dalí is considered the epitome of a surrealist artist whose work and way of life led to controversy. In fact, however, his work was based on scientific interest. He always incorporated the latest psychological, mathematical and medical findings into his artworks, which address far more themes than the subconscious and the dreamy. Dalí saw himself in the tradition of a universal genius like Leonardo da Vinci, who united science and art.
Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech was born on 11 May 1904 in Figueres, Catalonia. He was given the name of his two-year-old brother, who had died before Dalí was born. Dalí cited this as a reason for always wanting to prove his uniqueness to the world. As a child, he was interested in impressionist and classical painting. Dalí's technical skills were extraordinary, his later almost photo-realistic painting style set his works apart from those of other Surrealists and contributed to the high recognition value. From 1922, Dalí studied painting, sculpture and graphic arts in Madrid at the request of his father.
Dalí was known to his contemporaries as an eccentric and narcissist. In 1926 he was expelled from the art academy. He refused to take the exam because he thought the teachers were incapable of judging him. At this time, the young artist discovered Freud's psychoanalysis, which had considerable influence on his famous Surrealist works from the 1930s. Within a few years, he fell out with the other Surrealists in Paris.
In the 1940s, Dalí lived in the USA, where he began his Classical Period. At that time, he was the best-earning artist in the world. The senselessness of the world war prompted Dalí to return to past values. He painted in the style of the Renaissance, incorporated mathematical concepts such as the golden section and the latest findings such as the discovery of the spiral DNA molecule. Many critics often dismissed his works after 1940 as kitschy. Dalí suffered from Parkinson's disease and lived in seclusion from the 1980s. He died of heart failure on 23 January 1989.

Er verarbeitete stets neueste psychologische, mathematische und medizinische Erkenntnisse in seinen Kunstwerken, die weit mehr Themen ansprechen als das Unterbewusste und Träumerische. Dalí sah sich in der Tradition eines Universalgenies wie Leonardo da Vinci, der Wissenschaft und Kunst vereint.
Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech wurde am 11. Mai 1904 im katalanischen Figueres geboren. Er erhielt den Namen seines zwei Jahre alten Bruders, der vor Dalís Geburt verstorben war. Dalí nannte dies als Grund, der Welt stets seine Einzigartigkeit beweisen zu wollen. Als Kind interessierte er sich für impressionistische und klassische Malerei. Dalís technische Fähigkeiten waren außergewöhnlich, seine später fast fotorealistische Malweise hob seine Arbeiten von denen anderer Surrealisten ab und trug zum hohen Wiedererkennungswert bei. Ab 1922 studierte Dalí auf Wunsch seines Vaters Malerei, Bildhauerei und Grafik in Madrid.
Dalí war seinen Zeitgenossen als Exzentriker und Narzisst bekannt. 1926 wurde er von der Kunstakademie verwiesen. Er weigerte sich, am Examen teilzunehmen, da er die Lehrkräfte für unfähig hielt, ihn zu beurteilen. Zu dieser Zeit entdeckte der junge Künstler Freuds Psychoanalyse, die erheblichen Einfluss auf seine berühmten surrealistischen Werke aus den 1930ern hatte. Mit den anderen Surrealisten in Paris kam es innerhalb weniger Jahre zum Zerwürfnis.
In den 1940ern lebte Dalí in den USA, wo er seine Klassische Periode begann. Zu dieser Zeit war er der bestverdienende Künstler der Welt. Die Sinnlosigkeit des Weltkriegs veranlasste Dalí, sich auf vergangene Werte zurückzubesinnen. Er malte im Stil der Renaissance, verarbeitete mathematische Konzepte wie den Goldenen Schnitt und neueste Erkenntnisse wie die Entdeckung des spiralförmigen DNS-Moleküls. Viele Kritiker taten seine Arbeiten nach 1940 oft als kitschig ab. Dalí litt an der Parkinson-Krankheit und lebte ab den 1980ern zurückgezogen. Er verstarb am 23. Januar 1989 an Herzversagen.
