The artist George Grosz

  • German painter of the Weimar Republic.
  • Representative of Dada and New Objectivity.
  • Created caricaturesque, socially critical paintings.

Georg Ehrenfried Groß was born in Berlin on 26 July 1893 and proved to have a talent for drawing at an early age. At the age of 16 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden, later in Berlin. On an eight-month trip to Paris in 1913, Groß discovered Japanese woodcuts and French caricatures alongside works of modern art, which were to have a considerable influence on his work. So too did the World War I, in which Groß served as an infantryman but was discharged as unfit for service after only half a year. As an opponent of the war, he no longer wanted to bear a German name and called himself George Grosz.

Grosz earned a living as a draughtsman before being drafted again in 1917. According to his own account, he only escaped being shot as a deserter through the intervention of art patron Harry Graf Kessler. Influenced by his war experiences, Grosz and two artist friends brought the Dada scene, which had its origins in Zurich, to Berlin. There Dada took on its most extreme and experimental form. Grosz organised the First International Dada Fair in 1920.

During the Weimar Republic, Grosz had to appear in court several times because of his artworks and in some cases had to pay fines. He was accused of »insulting the Reichswehr«, »attacking public morals« or blasphemy. Numerous artistic and political associations, including international ones, showed solidarity with the painter.

In the 1920s, Grosz's work increasingly showed Futurist and Cubist traits, and some works are attributed to New Objectivity. In 1933 he emigrated to the USA for good, having accepted a teaching position in New York the previous summer. Today, about half of his works from Germany are considered lost, most of them probably destroyed by the National Socialists. In the USA, Grosz created almost 300 paintings that were popular on the art market. Political war painting remained his trademark, but from 1945 he painted in an increasingly decorative and apolitical manner. In 1959, Grosz died on 6 July just weeks after moving to Berlin. Grosz's artworks are so widely distributed throughout the world that it is said »Nowhere in the world do you get to see more than two paintings by Grosz in a museum«.
