The artist Hans Bellmer

  • German photographer, sculptor, painter, and author of Fantastic Realism.
  • Divided the art world with his repetitive, eroticized depictions of the female anatomy.
  • His doll sculptures particularly fascinated surrealists like André Breton.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the German photographer, sculptor, painter, and writer Hans Bellmer sympathized with the Parisian Dadaists and Surrealists, whom he always tried to win over. He polarized with his eerie doll sculptures, all of which focused exclusively on the female body. Today he is considered an important representative of Fantastic Realism.

Bellmer was born in Kattowitz in 1902 and grew up under a tyrannical father, from whom he sought escape in his childhood. In 1923, his father urged him to study at the Technical University in Berlin, although the young Bellmer was much more interested in the works of Karl Marx and the Dada movement. It was in this context that he met George Grosz, who encouraged him to become a typographer's apprentice at the Malik publishing house. Book covers and illustrations were the first artistic works Bellmer published.

In 1925, the young German spent some time in Paris, where he finally came into contact with the Dadaists and Surrealists, the group he so desired. Back in Berlin, he began to work on a theme that would accompany him to the end of his life. Erotic representations of the female anatomy, often the fetishized, maltreated body, had captivated Bellmer. Whether in drawings, sculptures, or photographs, he divided the art world with his recurring themes. While one side accused him of neurotic disorders, the other celebrated him for his surrealistic, anarchistic-erotic productions.

In 1933, the artist constructed his first prominent doll sculpture, arranging parts of mannequins into fetish dolls made of wood, metal, and plaster. He then photographed them in various positions - and soon published an essay along with the images. The images, which inspired the surrealist André Breton, were eventually published in the surrealist artists' magazine Minotaure.

When Bellmer moved to Paris in 1938, he took his depiction of the female body to an extreme: he stylized the woman as a biomechanical being. The Museum of Modern Art in New York even showed pictures of Bellmer's sculptures as part of its Surrealism exhibition. In 1939, the artist was interned with Max Ernst at the Les Milles camp. There the two created the joint work Schöpfungen, die Geschöpfe der Einbildungskraft.

After the war, Bellmer was able to work more freely. He published the book Les Jeux de la poupée (The Games of the Doll) with more doll paintings, and in 1953 he met his second wife, the writer Unica Zürn. The two lived in seclusion in a Paris hotel and wanted to know little of the outside world. Although Bellmer received several awards and was invited to participate in documenta II (1959) and documenta III (1964), he died in Paris in 1975 - his wife had thrown herself out of a window five years earlier.
