The artist Nan Goldin

  • US photographer known for photographing intimate biographical and provocative moments.
  • In her photographs, she also addressed her own heroin addiction – and was criticised for it.
  • Was allowed to curate the Rencontres d'Arles in 2009.

Nancy »Nan« Goldin, born 12.09.1953 in Washington D. C., is an American photographer known for her sensitive, provocative and personal imagery. Goldin uses her work to portray herself and the people surrounding her and to stage various phases of her turbulent life with unsparing directness. Life and death are always very close to one another in her pictures: she captured fateful biographical experiences such as physical abuse or the consequences of AIDS and drug abuse as well as taboo subjects such as nudity and sexuality in an impressive way – often she summarised several years in series.

Goldin thus brought her own low blows, such as her heroin addiction, which she reportedly overcame in 1988, into the centre of society for viewers to a certain extent. She was regularly criticised for the supposed glorification of this addiction. Goldin had to deal with a blow of fate early on: when she was 14 years old, her older sister took her own life. So she moved out of her parents' house shortly afterwards. She was already interested in photography in her teenage years and was even able to achieve a first smaller solo exhibition with some of her amateur pictures. In 1974 she began studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and graduated in 1978.

Goldin then moved to New York, where her artistic career was to begin. The period between 1980 and 1986, during which she produced her successful series of works and her most famous work to date, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, is described as her »breakthrough«. The sound image show was last exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2016/17. In 1982, the photographer travelled to West Berlin for the first time at the invitation of Alf Bold, an actor and cinema programme director, and from then on visited the present-day capital annually. In 1984, she was allowed to design the poster motif for the Berlin Film Festival.

She became friends with the band Die Tödliche Doris and photographed them during various performances in Paris and New York, among other places. One of Goldin's greatest achievements was her role as curator at the 2009 Rencontres d'Arles, a world-renowned photography festival. Since 2018, she has also been active as an activist against certain pharmaceutical companies after struggling with post-operative drug addiction in 2014. Goldin has already received various awards – in 2007 she received the Hasselblad Photography Award, in 2011 the Reminders Day Award and in 2019 the Ruth Baumgarte Art Prize. Today she lives and works mainly in New York.

Nancy »Nan« Goldin, geb.

The Ballad of Sexual Dependency fertigte.
