The artist Paul Signac

  • One of the most important neo-impressionists and co-inventor of pointillism.
  • Unmixed, bright colours gave his paintings a warm glow.
  • As well as painting, he was also known as a theorist: he was fascinated by the idea of anarchism.

The French painter and theorist Paul Signac is one of the most important Neo-Impressionists. Together with Georges Seurat, he invented the technique of pointillism. Signac was born in 1863 in the art capital of Paris. He never attended university, however, and was self-taught. At first he was inspired by the fashionable Impressionism and Claude Monet. However, he quickly moved away from their ideas of spontaneous painting and turned to a more strictly timed, classical approach such as that of Eugène Delacroix .

His acquaintance with Georges Seurat, made in 1884, was momentous: together they experimented with new techniques such as Divisionist painting. They explored the latest findings in colour theory. They no longer mixed pigments beforehand, but composed their paintings from many individual dots. The unadulterated colour made the paintings glow powerfully: This was the birth of pointillism.

Signac's favourite subjects were landscapes, which seemed to be bathed in a warm light because of the bright colours applied in dots. He was particularly interested in sailing ships and port activities. He was inspired by visits to Venice and Saint-Tropez.

In 1885, the two colleagues met Camille Pissarro, who quickly became enthusiastic about the new technique. Only a year later, the three of them and Pissarro's son exhibited the results of their new approach in a separate room at the 8th Salon des Indépendants, the exhibition venue of the Société des Artistes Indépendants they had founded.

From 1888, Signac became increasingly politicised: he cultivated a friendship with Jean Grave and published illustrations for Les Temps nouveaux, to which he later even donated some of his paintings. He was also attracted to the idea of anarchism and wrote essays on the subject.

In comparison to many other artists, Signac was not recognised and respected only after his death, but already during his lifetime. The French service order Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour) made him first a knight, then an officer and finally a commander. He also worked as a marine painter from 1915. Signac died in 1935 at the age of 71 in his home town of Paris.
