The artist Walker Evans

  • Was an important social documentary photographer of the 20th century.
  • Is known for his photographs of white farmers in the southern states.
  • His works are characterised by their reductiveness and immediacy.

Walker Evans was born in 1903 in St. Louis, Missouri. Before he turned to photography self-taught at the age of 25 and became an important artist in the history of photography, he pursued the ambition of becoming a writer. His interest in literature is also evident in his later work: Although he accepted various documentary commissions, such as for book projects and magazines, his artistic freedom remained important to him. In this respect, his pictures are described as »lyrical documentations«. He became better known for his work for the Resettlement Administration (RA), later known as the Farm Security Administration (FSA), for which Evans made social documentaries on the consequences of the »Great Depression«.

In 1936, Evans visited three farmer families in Alabama with the writer James Agee to document their living conditions. The assignment was for Fortune magazine, but the results were subsequently published in the book Let us now praise famous men, which only became a sales success when it was reprinted in 1960. Evans' Subway series also became known after a delay. In New York, he photographed underground passengers with a hidden camera and did not publish the photographs until 1966 in order to avoid possible lawsuits from the people he had unwittingly photographed.

Evans' works are characterised by their authenticity: The motifs are true to life and are depicted with a sober, reduced visual language. He often used the frontal view to reproduce the beauty of the motifs in their simplicity. This visual language enabled Evans to strike a balance between his claim to be a documentary photojournalist and an artist. His œuvre influenced Robert Frank, Helen Levitt, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus, among others. Street photography in particular is rooted in Evans' work. He himself was inspired by Eugène Atget and August Sander.

Walker Evans' photographs have left a large footprint in the history of photography and have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions. MoMA recognised the importance of his work early on and dedicated a solo show to Evans - and thus for the first time to a photographer - in 1938. In 1969, he was elected to the honourable American Academy of Arts and Science. Evans died six years later in New Haven, Connecticut.

Der Künstler Walker Evans

  • War ein bedeutender sozialdokumentarischer Fotograf des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Sechs Jahre später starb Evans in New Haven, Connecticut.
