The artist Brassaï

  • Hungarian-French artist and photographer, born Gyula Halász.
  • Told intense stories of Parisian nightlife with his book of photographs Paris de Nuit (1933).
  • Considered a pioneer of night and graffiti photography.

The Hungarian-French artist and photographer Gyula Halász was born in 1899 in Kronstadt, Austria-Hungary (now Brașov, Romania) - he later adopted the pseudonym Brassaï, which means »the one who comes from Brassó«. The young Halász studied in Germany and Hungary and finally went to Paris in 1924, a city with which he had a close relationship and which would change his life: in 1933, his book of photographs Paris de Nuit was published, for which he is still famous today. The book portrays Parisian nightlife and documents the essence of interwar Paris for posterity.

For his photographs, Brassaï roamed the artists' district of Montparnasse, which he knew inside out as a night owl. Street workers, prostitutes, the homeless, dancers, the Parisian wholesale market: Brassaï was not afraid of the »underworld« and, above all, he had a rare sense of atmosphere.

The young artist owed his focus on Paris at night to his friend André Kertész, also a photographer. Kertész had encouraged Brassaï to document nocturnal scenes because he noticed that his friend was particularly enthusiastic about them. In retrospect, Brassaï was truly a pioneer, as night photography at the time presented immense challenges to even the most experienced, requiring the mastery of difficult techniques.

But the Hungarian-born photographer was not only blessed with technical finesse; he also had an eye »for what goes on between the people of the shadows« (L. Fritz Gruber, 1964). Along with Man Ray, Brassaï was virtually THE photographer of the Surrealists, a fact that is not widely known today.

In the 1920s, he was one of the first to experiment with graffiti photography. He used grazing light to contrast the words, usually carved into walls, with their surroundings. He laid the groundwork for other artists, such as Jean Dubuffet, to explore the phenomenon of graffiti.

In addition to his famous night photographs, he was also known for his drawings, sculptures and medals. He also worked for Harper's Bazaar for many years, publishing travel documentaries for the magazine. His most famous medal was one on Picasso for the Club français de la médaille. In 1956, Brassaï even received a film prize at Cannes for one of his two films. The versatile artist died in Nice in 1984, two months before his 85th birthday.

Geburtstag in Nizza.
