Commentaire : Peintre méconnu en France, d'animaux et spécialement de chevaux, Clifton Tomson semble avoir bien assimilé les leçons du grand Stubbs comme en témoigne notre tableau, notamment dans la manière de rendre la robe des chevaux. Nous pouvons rapprocher notre œuvre d'un autre tableau de ce peintre, 'Juments et poulains dans un paysage boisé' (131 x 184 cm, ayant figuré à la vente Christie's, Londres, 24 novembre 1978).

Auction result well in line with expectations
In June 2008 Artcurial in Paris held the auction Old Master and 19th Century Paintings, which included the work Portrait D'Actios Et De Spring Devant Leurs Boxes by Clifton Tomson. The price achieved of EUR 3,470.00 was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as EUR 3,000.00 – 4,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Clifton Tomson achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Finish Of The St. Leger Stakes, 1815 in December 2012 with an auction result of GBP 55,250.00 (€ 68,138.59).

Im Juni 2008 führte Artcurial in Paris die Auktion Old Master and 19th Century Paintings durch, in der auch die Arbeit Portrait D'Actios Et De Spring Devant Leurs Boxes von Clifton Tomson zur Versteigerung kam. Der dabei erzielte Preis von EUR 3.470,00 lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit EUR 3.000,00 – 4.000,00 angegeben worden. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Clifton Tomson erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit The Finish Of The St. Leger Stakes, 1815 im Dezember 2012 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 55.250,00 (€ 68.138,59).
