Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Mrs. Samuel Watts (Sarah (Osborne) Oxnard Watts) by John Singleton Copley was auctioned at Christies in New York in January this year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 100,000.00 – 150,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 63,000.00 (€ 58,021.74). Admittedly, works by John Singleton Copley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of James Tilley (1707-1765) in January 2006 with an auction result of USD 374,400.00 (€ 307,945.39).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Als die Arbeit Mrs. Samuel Watts (Sarah (Osborne) Oxnard Watts) von John Singleton Copley im Januar diesen Jahres bei Christies in New York versteigert wurde, fiel das Ergebnis ein wenig enttäuschend aus. Das Auktionshaus hatte den Schätzpreis zuvor mit einer Spanne von USD 100.000,00 – 150.000,00 angegeben, von der nicht einmal die Untergrenze erreicht wurde - tatsächlich wechselte das Kunstwerk für USD 63.000,00 (€ 58.021,74) den Besitzer. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von John Singleton Copley auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Portrait of James Tilley (1707-1765) im Januar 2006 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 374.400,00 (€ 307.945,39).
