The Underground Gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park is hosting its first-ever group exhibition: Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from the Tia Collection brings together 67 works by 38 artists. The exhibition opens on June 13.

Never before has there been an exhibition in the United Kingdom featuring so many Indigenous North American artists: The Underground Gallery at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Europe’s largest sculpture park, will present 67 works by 38 artists: Hold to This Earth: Works by Contemporary Indigenous North American Artists from the Tia Collection is a comprehensive, cross-generational exhibition that brings together sculpture, film, photography, painting, ceramics, and textile art, offering a rare insight into the broad spectrum of contemporary Indigenous North American art. The exhibition runs from June 13 to April 18, 2027, in West Bretton.

Hold to This Earth presents works by DC Allen, Neal Ambrose-Smith, Teresa Baker, Raven Chacon, Melissa Cody, Yatika Starr Fields, Nicholas Galanin, Jeffrey Gibson, Raven Halfmoon, Bob Haozous, Sheldon Harvey, Hock E Aye Vi Edgar Heap of Birds, Allan Houser, Zig Jackson, Sayo’:kla Kindness-Williams, Brad Kahlhamer, Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Matthew Kirk, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Dakota Mace, George Morrison, Michael Namingha, Virgil Ortiz, Mikayla Patton, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Wendy Red Star, Eric-Paul Riege, Cara Romero, Diego Romero, Rose B. Simpson, Roxanne Swentzell, Tyrrell Tapaha, Maggie Thompson, Zoë Urness, Kay WalkingStick, Marie Watt, Dyani White Hawk, and Emmi Whitehorse.

Six works from the exhibition are displayed in the outdoor area surrounding the gallery, including the approximately 2.75-meter-tall (about 9 ft) sculpture The Guardians (2024), Raven Halfmoon’s first work of this scale. In this piece, Halfmoon draws on the artworks of her ancestors and a Caddo creation myth in which humans were formed from the earth.Art.Salon

Since then, the collection has been steadily expanded and serves as a mirror of cultures and the times. Starting June 12, the institution will present numerous new acquisitions in a new exhibition, including works by Matthew Brandt, Richard Learoyd, and Catherine Opie.
