Double exhibition in the Saarlandmuseum − Modern Gallery

Innovative artist couple: »Charlotte Berend-Corinth − Rediscovered!« and »Lovis Corinth − Life, a celebration!«

A comprehensive double exhibition with over 170 exhibits is offered by the Saarlandmuseum − Moderne Galerie from November 05, 2021 to February 20, 2022. Especially through the work of Berend-Corinth, who is known as a frequent model of her husband, exciting insights are expected.

When Lovis Corinth left Munich in 1901, he already had his first successes as a painter, but he had not yet achieved his breakthrough. With most of his works he could hardly attract attention, and so he hoped for greater success in Berlin, where he also founded a painting school. His first student was Charlotte Berend, more than 20 years his junior, who served as his model. This developed into a relationship that led to marriage in 1904. Even after that, Berend-Corinth and their joint children were repeatedly portrayed by Lovis Corinth.

Artistically, both became successful: they were members of the Berlin Secession, Berend-Corinth as one of the few women. In addition to portraits of his wife and family, Lovis Corinth is best known for self-portraits, dramatic depictions of contemporary life, and unconventional treatments of biblical and mythological themes. His impulsive application of color places him close to Impressionism, but he actually created an independent style that cannot be attributed to any art historical classification. Charlotte Behrend-Corinth was primarily interested in the modern, boundary-breaking life in Berlin of the Weimar Republic and also taught aspiring painters herself. Because of her Jewish ancestry, she emigrated to the USA in the 1930s. As a painter, she fell into oblivion over time.

In the USA she was active as an author and published her husband's catalog raisonné. Now she is receiving her own retrospective, which is intended to make her work, which was highly regarded during her lifetime, known to the public again. Especially in comparison to the paintings of her famous husband, it becomes clear that Berend-Corinth was much more than just a model, she went her own artistic way.Art.Salon
