Since 2013, Galleri Heike Arndt DK in Berlin has organized the Fresh Legs open call with the aim of presenting artworks that reflect on societal structures and raise questions about humanity. This year’s edition was organized in collaboration with INSELGALERIE BERLIN. From 875 submissions, 69 artistic projects from 23 countries were selected. Twenty-five artists are exhibiting at Galleri Heike Arndt DK and 44 at INSELGALERIE. The exhibition features works such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and video art. The first part of Fresh Legs opens on June 3 at Galleri Heike Arndt DK, and the second part opens the following day at INSELGALERIE BERLIN.
Artist Elvira Flamm, a participant in the Art.Salon artist program, is taking part in the exhibition at INSELGALERIE. She is presenting a work from her well-known series Ikonen ohne Namen (Icons without names), which she began in 2022. The series is based on images from the mass media that tend to become mere representations of a »trending topic« that will be forgotten by tomorrow, rather than fulfilling their actual function: to report on disasters and human suffering in a way that is both lasting and thought-provoking. In her artistically transformed images, Flamm uses pixels to mimic the visual language of digital media and highlights the anonymity of the people depicted, whose faces are nonetheless seen in media outlets worldwide. Viewed from a distance, the figurative aspect is more prominent in the works; upon closer inspection, the impression shifts toward the abstract. The work shown in Fresh Legs reworks a photograph taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
