Carrie Mae Weems in a nutshell

The Hasselblad Photography Prize is one of the most prestigious awards for women photographers. In 2023, Carrie Mae Weems became the first African-American woman to win it. The prize is named after Victor Hasselblad, a Swedish pioneer of photography in the mid-20th century. Weems had this to say about the announcement, »In the midst of the radical shifts taking place across cultural institutions, and as the first African American woman to receive the Hasselblad Award, some might say, ‘it’s about time!’ Nevertheless, receiving the Hasselblad Award has left me speechless.«

For this series of photographs from 1990, Weems staged a fictional drama that takes place in a sparse room with a large table. She herself stars in the photographs, which make a space with female connotations, the kitchen, the center of the action, where life's most important moments and greatest emotions are revealed. Through this series, Weems explores the strength and beauty in the lives of (black) women.

In 2003, the photo series Louisiana Project was created. Weems positions herself centrally in the image in most of the photographs, in back view and clothing from the time of slavery. Surrounding her are landscapes or stately homes that glow with beauty, but are places of horrific life stories that should not be forgotten.

Carrie Mae Weems quotes

»Art is the one place we all turn to for solace.«
»It's fair to say that black folks operate under a cloud of invisibility − this too is part of the work, is indeed central to [my photographs]... This invisibility − this erasure out of the complex history of our life and time − is the greatest source of my longing.«
»The camera gave me an incredible freedom. It gave me the ability to parade through the world and look at people and things very, very closely.«
