The artist Tacita Dean

  • Contemporary English conceptual artist, lives and works in Berlin.
  • Works across media, including film, photography, painting, drawing and sound installations.
  • Was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998 with the work Disappearance at Sea.

Conceptual artist Tacita Dean, CBE, was born in Canterbury, England on November 12, 1965. She studied at Falmouth School of Art from 1985 to 1988 and received her master's degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1992. In the same year the first international exhibitions of her work began. She became known to a wide audience primarily through her unconventional 16-millimeter films. For example, she was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1998 for her film Disappearance at Sea, which is about a lighthouse.

In 2000, Dean began a fellowship program in Berlin and was awarded the Aachen Art Prize two years later. Later in her career, she participated in the Venice Biennale three times and documenta 13 in Kassel once, among others. In 2019, she was awarded the British Order of Knighthood, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE for short). Since April 2016, the Jakob Kaiser House of the German Parliament has exhibited her work Die Regimentstochter. The installation consists of 36 program books in wooden frames, which in turn are on loan from the Foundation Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

Dean lives and works in Berlin. Her works are part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Tate Gallery (London), the Reina Sofia National Museum (Madrid), and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.), among others.

In her work, Dean employs a variety of techniques and media, including filming, photography, painting, drawing, sound installations, and visual storytelling. She often combines the various media. In terms of content, Dean addresses themes of time, transience, and memory in these cross-media works. She is primarily concerned with the relationship between history and the present. Influenced by artists such as Marcel Broodthaers and Robert Smithson and writer J.G. Ballard, issues of cultural loss also play a role in her art. People and buildings are among her frequent motifs.

November 1965 in Canterbury, England geboren.

2019 wurde sie mit dem britischen Ritterorden, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (kurz CBE) ausgezeichnet.
