Ugo Rondinone was born on 30 November 1964 in Switzerland and is a conceptual, media and installation artist. In 1983 he moved to Zurich and became an assistant to the Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch. He then studied under Ernst Caramelle and others at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 1986 to 1990 and moved to Zurich after graduating. Eight years later, in 1998, he was awarded the artist's studio at MoMa PS1. Since then, Ugo Rondinone has lived and worked both in New York City and Zurich.
In the 1990s, Ugo Rondinone made a name for himself as an artist. He produced many circular paintings during this period, which are said to bear a resemblance to the works of Kenneth Noland. As a conceptual, media and installation artist, over the years Rondinone worked with various media such as large-scale woodcuts, painting, sculpture, photography, videos and comics. Metaphorical and iconographic images such as clouds, suns, animals and figures recur in his wide-ranging portfolio. He often adds quotations from literature and pop culture to his art works and his artificial installations often contain art historical references.
Thematically, on the one hand, Rondinone deals with themes and motifs from everyday life and changes their poetic dimension through special material treatment or isolation. On the other hand, he deals a lot with spatial aspects and the visualisation of time and transience. His totem-like figures have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris (2009) and at the Yokohama Triennale (2011).
His best-known works include the installation Human Nature (2013), a group of new monumental figures made of unplaned bluestone slabs, and the limestone boulder installation Seven Magic Moments (2016-2021). Both have been exhibited at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan. In addition, Rondinone has had various solo exhibitions, including at Kunsthalle Wien in 2002, Centre Pompidou (Paris) in 2003, Whitechapel Gallery (London) in 2006 and MUSAC (León) in 2009. His work is also part of the collection of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

Von 1986 bis 1990 studierte er dann u. a. unter Ernst Caramelle an der Universität für angewandte Kunst in Wien und zog nach seinem Abschluss nach Zürich. Acht Jahre später, 1998, wurde ihm das Künstleratelier im MoMa PS1 zugesprochen. Seitdem lebt und arbeitet Ugo Rondinone sowohl in New York City als auch in Zürich.
In den 1990er Jahren machte sich Ugo Rondinone als Künstler einen Namen. Er fertigte in dieser Zeit viele Rundgemälde, denen eine Ähnlichkeit zu den Werken von Kenneth Noland nachgesagt wird. Als Konzept-, Medien- und Installationskünstler arbeitete Rondinone über die Jahre mit verschiedenen Medien wie großformatigen Holzschnitten, Malerei, Skulpturen, Fotografie, Videos und Comics. In seinem breitgefächerten Portfolio wiederholen sich metaphorische und ikonografische Bilder wie Wolken, Sonnen, Tiere und Figuren. Seinen Werken fügt er oft Zitate aus Literatur und Popkultur hinzu und seine artifiziellen Installationen beinhalten häufig kunstgeschichtliche Verweise.
Thematisch befasst sich Rondinone zum einen mit Themen und Motiven aus dem Alltag und verändert durch eine spezielle Materialbehandlung oder Isolation deren poetische Dimension. Zum anderen setzt er sich viel mit räumlichen Aspekten sowie der Visualisierung von Zeit und Vergänglichkeit auseinander. Seine totemartigen Figuren wurden weltweit ausgestellt, darunter im Jardin des Tuileries in Paris (2009) und auf der Yokohama Triennale (2011).
