The artist Zanele Muholi

  • Contemporary non-binary artist from South Africa.
  • Known for the photo series Faces and Phases (2006-2016).
  • Their work aims to increase the visibility of Black LGBTQ+ people.

Zanele Muholi was born on July 19, 1972 in Durban, South Africa, and works with photography, video, and installation. Muholi defines as non-binary and uses the English pronouns they and them. In 2002, Muholi co-founded the organization Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), which focuses on protected spaces for Black lesbians. The following year, the artist successfully completed photography training in Johannesburg. It was there that Muholi's first solo exhibition took place at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2004.

Muholi actively advocates for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and aims to increase the visibility of the Black LGBTQ+ community through their own art. Muholi became known to a wider audience with the series Faces and Phases (2006-2016), which includes hundreds of sensitive portraits of Black lesbian women, trans and non-gender conforming individuals, challenging South Africa's customary rhetoric that homosexuality would be »un-African«.

In 2009, Muholi earned a Master of Fine Arts in Documentation from Ryerson University in Toronto. Their thesis topic was about Black lesbian identity and politics in South Africa. Four years later, Muholi received an honorary professorship at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen and was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize two years later. Works by the artist were shown at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019) and they was awarded the €15,000 Spectrum - International Prize for Photography in 2020.

Works by Muholi are in the collections of the Tate Modern (London), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Guggenheim (New York), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York), among others.
