Samuel Lewis Francis, born 25 June 1923 in San Mateo, California, deceased 4 November 1994 in Santa Monica, better known as Sam Francis, was an artist of Abstract Expressionism and Colour Field Painting. The graphic artist was influenced early on by Abstract Expressionists such as Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still. He gathered further impressions early on during a stay in Europe. He lived in Paris for a long time and came into closer contact with Informel (informal art) there.
From there he emerged as one of the most important representatives of Tachism, a branch of Informal art that developed in Paris in the 1940s and is very close to US Action Painting. This led to his first gaining some notoriety in Europe, before he later made a name for himself in the USA as well. Francis changed the format and medium of his paintings several times, but he always remained true to Informal Art.
In Paris, for example, he created his Blue Ball series, a series of large-format paintings all consisting of blue forms against a white background. As a representative of abstract expressionism, he was on the one hand known for his generous use of colour and on the other hand often played with emptiness, such as after his creative period in Japan, in which he staged it as the centre of his paintings.
His life's work is also characterised by a series of wall paintings that he produced from the 1950s until his death in 1994. Today, his paintings are part of the collections of numerous museums worldwide, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Der Grafiker ließ sich bereits früh von abstrakten Expressionisten wie Arshile Gorky oder Clyfford Still beeinflussen. Weitere Inspirationen sammelte er früh während eines Europaaufenthalts.
So lebte er längere Zeit in Paris und kam dort enger mit dem Informel (informelle Kunst) in Berührung. Daraus ging er als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Tachismus hervor, einem Zweig der informellen Kunst, der sich in den 1940er Jahren in Paris entwickelte und dem US-amerikanischen Action Painting sehr nahe ist. Das führte dazu, dass er zuerst in Europa einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad erlangte, bevor er sich später auch in den USA einen Namen machte.
Francis wechselte häufiger das Format und das Medium seiner Gemälde, doch blieb er der informellen Kunst stets treu.
