This artwork by Nukina Kaioku achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in April 2015. In the An Inquiring Mind: American Collecting of Japanese and Korean Art auction, the work Quietly Reading at Night, circa 1848 sold for USD 5,625.00 (€ 5,039.42) - well above the upper estimate of USD 3,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Nukina Kaioku; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Winter landscape sold at auction in March 2003 with the realized price of USD 5,736.00 (€ 5,262.39).
