On 24 September 2022, the 58th edition of Carnegie International will begin in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Running until 02 April 2023, the oldest exhibition of contemporary and international art in North America will once again survey how art and artists respond to the critical issues of our time. This year's curator, Sohrab Mohebbi, has assembled a Pittsburgh-based curatorial team that includes Associate Curator Ryan Inouye and Curatorial Assistant Talia Heiman. They all contribute to the exhibition research, selection of artists, public programmes and publication projects for Carnegie International in order to fulfill the exhibition's ambition: to bring together new commissions, existing works and projects by established as well as emerging artists from the nation, abroad and the region.
Founded in 1896, the Carnegie International is considered the oldest exhibition of international art after the Venice Biennale. Organised by the Carnegie Museum of Art, it usually takes place every three to five years. However, Eric Crosby, the director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, announced last summer that it will be held every four years in the future. Like the events of 1991 and 2013, the 58th edition of the exhibition will take place at various locations in Pittsburgh's Oakland district. Galleries and public spaces in the museum are being redesigned especially for the occasion.
