In Abwesenheit (In Absence) is a solo exhibition of works by German artist Alicja Kwade (b. 1979) that will be on view at the Berlinische Galerie beginning September 18, 2021. There, through April 4, 2022, the museum will show recent works by Kwade that underscore her orientation toward scientific, philosophical, and social issues.

The exhibits at In Absence focus on human physiology, which is transported, among other things, by means of an expansive installation, thereby bringing the physical presence in space into focus. The visualization of her own heartbeat as well as that of her own fully read genome are also just some of the physical data and chemical elements with the help of which she restages the classic self-portrait. The entity of space plays a role in In Abwesenheit (In Absence) not only in the localization of human physiology – the central installation is site-specific and thus part of the »in situ projects« in Berlin, the experience of which presupposes an interaction between site and artwork.Art.Salon
