The archipelago of Hawaii in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, although a state of the USA, is equally shaped by Asian and especially Polynesian cultural influences of its indigenous inhabitants. This special combination also affects Hawaii's contemporary art, which will be presented in all its forms at the Triennial. The focus is on artworks that follow the indigenous cultural heritage and reflect the history of Hawaii. After two biennials in 2017 and 2019 with a total of more than 200,000 visitors, the format will be replaced by a triennial starting in 2022.
The event is organized by the non-profit organization Hawaii Contemporary. It is to be held at seven different locations throughout Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, and will cast its spell over eleven weeks, and not only art experts. To this end, a broad supporting program with artist talks and workshops has been developed, some of which are free of charge. The first Hawaii Triennial with 43 artists opens on February 18 and runs until May 08, 2022.
