Golden Lion for lifetime achievement goes to two female artists
Katharina Fritsch of Germany and Cecilia Vicuña of Chile will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The awards will be presented on April 23, the opening day of the 59th Venice Biennale.
Chilean artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña and German sculptor Katharina Fritsch will receive lifetime achievement awards at this year's Venice Biennale. The awards will be presented on the opening day, April 23. Cecilia Allemani, curator of the 2022 Biennale, particularly highlights Vicuña's translations of Latin American poetry collections and her artistic treatment of indigenous traditions. A painter and performance artist, Vicuña is also a pioneer of feminism. Katharina Fritsch's contribution to sculpture was exceptional, she said. Fritsch represented Germany at the 1995 Biennale, and is known for larger-than-life, monochrome sculptures such as the 1993 Rat King.

For the first time, a major museum in the USA is presenting her work: Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck opens on December 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
