Katharina von Werz is considered the grande dame of the Munich art scene, known not only for her works but also for her memorable artists' parties. The Buchheim Museum in Bernried wants to emulate von Werz and is dedicating a selected retrospective to the painter and sculptor with Katharina von Werz. Tanz vor der Stadt (Dance in front of the city). The exhibition, curated by Bernhart Schwenk, curator of contemporary art at the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, and Daniel J. Schreiber, director of the Buchheim Museum, can be enjoyed by visitors from November 06, 2021.
Born in Munich in 1940, Katharina von Werz studied first at the Akademie für Graphisches Gewerbe in Munich and then at the École des Beaux Arts in Geneva. Away from the stylistic currents and trends of contemporary art history, she developed a complex and striking visual formal language in her works. With the observation of nature and the sensory impressions arising from it as the foundation of her work, she directs her focus primarily on the transformation of her subjects. The human figure serves as an essential motif, which she abstracts strongly but not to the point of unrecognizability.
