»We are here to stay«: the sheer size of the projection area – 3,200 m² – underlines the statement made by Bruno Monnier, President of Culturespaces. The French company opened its first location for immersive art in Les Baux-de-Provence in 2012. Since then, many more have been added, including in Paris, Amsterdam, Seoul and New York. Hamburg is now the second location in Germany after Dortmund. »The Überseequartier in HafenCity is the best location of all our venues in Europe to date: a world of experience in itself [...]. We are delighted to contribute to the further development of this vibrant part of Hamburg with Port des Lumières,« says Monnier. Port des Lumières opens on April 9 with three exhibitions, on April 8, there will be an exclusive Pre-Opening. 80 video projectors and 50 loudspeakers and subwoofers will bring the artworks of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) to life. Alongside Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion and Hundertwasser: In the wake of the Vienna Secession, the experimental exhibition Journey: Contemporary Creation shows contemporary art by production studio Nohlab.
Having previously only hosted temporary immersive art exhibitions in Hamburg, the Port des Lumières is now the first permanent center in the city. Changing exhibitions make new visits worthwhile, and special exhibitions on various themes such as fashion, music, comics and photography will open twice a year. Children get their money's worth in their own area: In the Kids' Atelier, young visitors can discover their very own magical world and live out their creativity at various stations – and in this way gain easy and playful access to art.
The Port des Lumières was originally scheduled to open in April 2024, but water damage to the building prevented this from happening. Tickets already purchased for the original opening can now be used for a new date via the rebooking tool.
