Systems of Light and Deception

Interactive installations, light sculptures, and large-scale geometric-abstract paintings: The Tate Modern presents the diverse body of work by Julio Le Parc, spanning seven decades. An exhibition like a walk through a labyrinth: Instead of being guided by a concept, visitors explore the current Tate Modern exhibition independently, finding their own paths. The labyrinth consists of the diverse works of the recently deceased Argentine artist Julio Le Parc (1928-2026), whose career spans over 70 years. In this way, the museum exhibition conveys the artist’s aim of making the audience aware of the active role it plays in art and how it can help shape artworks. Le Parc is particularly known for his innovative kinetic works, some of which incorporate light and reflections. Other artworks feature movable elements that can be arranged by visitors. The exhibition of the same name at the Tate Modern now traces the artist’s influential body of work through 60 representative pieces. The show opens on June 11 in London and runs through May 3, 2027.

Julio Le Parc had been living in Paris since 1958, where he became a fixture of an art scene focused on innovation and creativity in the years that followed. Among other things, he participated twice in the documenta in Kassel (1964, 1968) and won the Grand Prize for Painting at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966. He was also a co-founder of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel, which was dedicated to kinetic art.Art.Salon
