National Gallery - Winslow Homer's first exhibition in the UK

The Force of Nature

The U.S. and European art scenes are closely intertwined. Nevertheless, it happens from time to time that history has produced great artists whose names have not been heard so often on the other continent. With Winslow Homer, London's National Gallery will be presenting one of them from September 10.

For some time, the National Gallery in London has made it its task to introduce the English public to U.S. artists who have so far received little attention on the European continent. Under this maxim, the museum has already successfully exhibited works by George Bellows, Frederic Church and Thomas Cole.

Now a painter from the late 19th century is to make his way to England – with Winslow Homer. Force of Nature, the National Gallery will present the first comprehensive show of the artist's work. Between September 10, 2022, and January 8, 2023, it will present the power of nature with all its light and shadow sides, as Winslow Homer (1836-1910) tried to bring them to the canvas. At the same time, it brings European visitors closer to an artist they are unlikely to have encountered before. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Those who are not yet convinced should be lured into the exhibition by the words of the National Gallery's director, Dr. Gabriele Finaldi: »Little known in Britain, Winslow Homer’s paintings explore the power, grandeur and beauty of nature as well as the dangers it poses to human life. Conflict in human relations, the struggle for survival, and personal isolation are among his themes, treated both poetically and with dazzling technical bravura.«Art.Salon
