Painting, photography, design, music and fashion with common beginnings in street art: the Markthalle Chemnitz will be showing works by around 70 artists from various fields who began their artistic careers in graffiti or street art but have since taken new paths. The artists come from countries including the USA, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Poland, Sweden, Ukraine and Hungary. Graffiti developed from a subculture into an art genre with various styles and is just as diverse today as it was in the past. Influences from various creative forms of expression such as pop art or photography are unmistakable. The multidisciplinary exhibition HALLENKUNST 2025, presented on 5,000 m², can be seen from August 28 to September 21. The show is part of the program of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz.

The cultural-historical roots and the role of Chemnitz for graffiti and street art are considered very important. The city acted as a kind of »stopover« for the movement, which spread from Berlin and West Germany via the former GDR and later the new federal states to Eastern Europe. The HALLENKUNST project documents this development with a comprehensive review of art and cultural history. The exhibition program includes artist talks and performances, and new murals were also created as part of the show between September 2024 and July 2025 in various public spaces throughout the city.Art.Salon
