Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) learned painting the classical way, including a two-year study stay in Italy. He then traveled through Spain and painted frescoes in the late Baroque style in numerous churches. His fame grew and at the age of 27 Goya became the court painter of the Spanish king in Madrid. Goya painted portraits of the royal family and countless persons of the Spanish nobility. He regularly took part in salons, where he always dealt with current affairs - such as the French Revolution, which particularly fascinated him.
