»The Space Between. The Modern in Korean Art«

Over the past hundred years, Korea has been repeatedly influenced by external states - not only politically. The art of the respective countries also touched the techniques of the East Asian territory. With The Space Between. The Modern in Korean Art, LACMA will highlight this branch of modern Korean art history beginning Sept. 11.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art trumpets an exhibition beginning Sept. 11 that is the first of its kind in the global North: The Space Between. The Modern in Korean Art features Korean art from 1897 to 1965 and is the second of three exhibitions held as part of Hyundai Motor's Korean Art Scholarship Initiative. It will be held at Resnick Pavilion through Feb. 19, 2023.

The selection of about 130 works shows the influences of European art on Korean art, that of Japanese art during the Korean Empire (1897-1910) and the colonial period (1910-45), and that of U.S. art during the Korean War (1950-53).  At the same time, it provides a glimpse into the dawn of modernity. The exhibits reflect how new media and techniques from abroad found their way in – including oil paintings, ink drawings, photographs and sculptures.Art.Salon
