The Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam opens in new old form

The internationally highly regarded fair will show the latest work of selected contemporary photographers from 17 to 19 September 2021. After experimental years, the organisers are returning to the original exhibition concept - and adding two new sections to the fair.

September 14, 2021

Unseen, the first fair to focus exclusively on contemporary photography, will reopen its doors in Amsterdam's Westergas Cultural Park. Since 2020, it has been part of Art Rotterdam, the most important contemporary art fair in the Netherlands. Because of last year's cancellation due to the pandemic, this is now the first Unseen Photo Fair under the leadership of the new organiser. The team is led by Roderick van der Lee, the fair's co-founder and director from 2011 to 2016, who is once again taking over his old position.

With two new sections, Unseen now wants to lay the foundation for its form in the coming years: Past/Present and Unbound, which take a look at the origins of photography respectively beyond its borders. Past/Present presents selected historical photographs juxtaposed with works by contemporary artists. Thus, for the first time, photographs taken before the 21st century will be on display at the fair, including a selection from August Sander's famous »People of the 20th Century«.

Unbound is guest-curated by Marcel Feil, former artistic director of Foam Photography Museum, which co-founded Unseen with van der Lee ten years ago. This section draws on the experiences of Unseen's experimental festival years and expands the horizons of conventional photography. As a visitor, you will get to see digital and video art, sculptures as well as installations in addition to the classic two-dimensional images.

The fair is accompanied by an online catalogue with price information on the artworks as well as extensive background information on the exhibiting artists and galleries. The catalogue can be found at Galleryviewer.com.Art.Salon
