Ukrainian pavilion opens as planned

The 59th Venice Biennale begins on April 23. At the world's most prestigious art exhibition, the Ukrainian pavilion will open as planned despite the war. The artists from Russia will not participate on their own initiative.

Ukrainian artist Pavlo Makov will represent his home country's pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. Despite the situation in his country, he intends to continue working and open his exhibition as planned on April 23. At the time of the decision, Makov was in Kharkiv, and his three curators were in Kiev. Biennale officials are currently looking for a way to bring them all safely to Italy. Makov plans to implement a new version of his 1995 installation The Fountain of Exhaustion.

Already at the end of February, Russian artists Alexandra Sukhareva and Kirill Savchenkov declared that they would not open their pavilion. » There is no place for art when civilians are dying under the fire of missiles, when citizens of Ukraine are hiding in shelters, when Russian protesters are getting silenced,« they wrote in a joint statement.Art.Salon
