Palm Springs Art Museum: »American Framing«

Wood-frame construction: typically American?

From 12 January, the Palm Springs Art Museum will be devoting itself to a special building construction: the exhibition American Framing examines wood-frame construction, a little-noticed but frequently used technique in the USA. American Framing designed the US Pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Over 90% of residential buildings in the US are wood frame. This is a further development of central European timber frame construction. Its origins can be traced back to the early 19th century. During the rapid settlement of the West of today's USA, the wood-frame system was ideally suited to erect many houses as well as public buildings quickly and cheaply. To this day, this construction method is predominant in the construction of private homes in the USA.

In 2021, the exhibition American Framing was on show at the Venice Architecture Biennale. It designed the US pavilion and focused attention on an underestimated, typically American construction method. The Palm Springs Art Museum is reviving the show and offering visitors an exciting museum experience with numerous models, archival photographs and a full-scale structure. The presentation runs from 12 January to 2 July 2023.Art.Salon
