Yassi Mazandi: kinetic sculpture about the search for meaning and climate change

A 12th century poem combined with climate change: Yassi Mazandi's sculpture Language of the Birds fascinates with simplicity and a powerful statement. From 14 August, it will be on display outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for almost a year.

August 14, 2022

Yassi Mazandi was inspired to create the sculpture Language of the Birds by a 12th century Persian poem by Farid al-Din 'Attar. In it, 100 birds set out in search of a worldly ruler, the mythical Simurgh. When only 30 of them are left alive, they realise that they themselves are the Simurgh. Mazandi puts the search for meaning in the light of climate change, which of course also threatens various bird species. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is honouring Mazandi's kinetic bronze sculpture with a special place: from 14 August 2022 to 19 June 2023, the featherless flying birds will be installed on the north side of the Resnick Pavilion.

Yassi Mazandi was born in Tehran, grew up in the UK and lives in Los Angeles. Her conscious and unconscious reactions to natural events are the main subject of her oeuvre to date, which is represented in numerous private and public collections around the world. In 2021, she also began her first NFTs.Art.Salon
