The artist Kehinde Wiley

  • Contemporary US portrait painter living in NYC.
  • Depicts primarily African-American individuals often in the classical style of the Old Masters.
  • In 2017, became the first Black artist to produce an official portrait of a U.S. President.

U.S. portrait painter Kehinde Wiley was born in Los Angeles, California, on February 28, 1977, to an African-American mother and Nigerian father. He went to Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999. Two years later, he successfully completed his master's degree in the same subject at Yale University before going to the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York City) as a visiting artist. Wiley gained a great deal of publicity in 2017 when he was commissioned to paint Barack Obama, becoming the first Black artist to make an official portrait of a President of the United States.

His work has been exhibited in many museums, including the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, CONNERSMITH (formerly Conner Contemporary) in Washington, D.C., and the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Kehinde Wiley is known for his naturalistic paintings. His large-scale works are characterized by the fact that he often depicts African-American people from different ethnic and social classes, often in the classical style of the Old Masters. In this way, he raises issues of power, privilege, and identity in his works, and in particular highlights the absence or lack of Black figures in European art.

His style ranges from French Rococo to Islamic architecture to West African textile design. Sometimes his work is referred to as Bling-Bling Baroque. Wiley himself says that artist Kerry James Marshall is a major influence on his art.

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Wiley exhibition at the 59th Biennale di Venezia

Western European art history is brimming with depictions of fallen warriors, martyrs and other heroic figures. The American artist Kehinde Wiley has made this heroic epic his own and used it to create completely new portraits: black people who have been silenced take the place of the Western European ideal figures. The Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice is now taking them up in the exhibition.
