The artist Roy Lichtenstein

  • One of the most important Pop Art artists from the New York scene of the 1960s.
  • »Look Mickey« made him and his later commercial comic style famous.
  • Returned to his expressionist and cubist roots in the 1980s.

It all started with Look Mickey (1961) – A comic strip showing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck out fishing. It was the beginning of the successful career of Roy Lichtenstein, probably one of the best-known representatives of Pop Art. His comic-print style, formed from so-called Benday Dots, with thoughtful, frightened blondes and men in superhero aesthetics, made him known to a wide mass of people. Born in New York in 1927, Roy Fox Lichtenstein began learning to draw as a self-taught artist in his teens. Before his artistic breakthrough, Lichtenstein experienced several unsuccessful years.

In addition to his groundbreaking comic style, his career leap was helped above all by the contacts he made with the greats of the scene while working at Rutgers University in New Jersey – Allan Kaprow, Robert Watts, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine and Robert Whitman are just a few of the artists with whom he socialised during this time. Inspired by the new impressions, he first experimented with chewing gum pictures, which eventually led him to incorporate the comic element, the speech bubble, that is characteristic of his work.

In combination with the industrial comic style, this finally led to the decisive work Look Mickey in 1961. From then on, Lichtenstein's artistic career went uphill: Leo Castelli exhibited Look Mickey and six other stylistically similar paintings in his gallery in New York in the same year – in 1962, only one year later, Lichtenstein, who was now 35, had sold them all to renowned art collectors. Afterwards he followed moved to New York and fully turned to art – from then on, sculptures and installations were also part of his portfolio.

During this time, his style was consolidated in the direction »commercial« art: as was usual for Pop Art, he mainly used everyday objects. He also stuck to his comic abstractions from the late 1960s onwards, for which he is still mainly known today. In the 1980s, Lichtenstein turned away from this style and returned to his surreal expressionist and cubist roots from his younger years. The important Pop Art artist died in New York in 1997 as a result of pneumonia one month before his 74th birthday.

Geburtstag.
