The artist Tom Wesselmann

  • One of the most important representatives of US Pop Art.
  • Great American Nude series is his most successful work.
  • Great American Nude #98 (1967) is in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

Tom Wesselmann, born 23 February 1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, died 17 December 2004 in New York, was one of the most important representatives of US Pop Art. Wesselmann's creative development initially began under the sign of Expressionism, but he soon turned away from it. The work for which he was later to become famous originated in Pop Art, although he distanced himself from this external attribution. Today, Wesselmann is counted among the most important artists of US Pop Art, alongside Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

Wesselmann's extensive depictions of female nudes and body parts became his hallmark; especially as the Great American Nude series, which he began in 1961, was to become his seminal work. The nudes are often characterised by sexual imagery. The viewer is given a glimpse of pop-coloured rooms in which undressed women pose lasciviously on blankets and chaise longues – in the 1960s, Wesselmann could certainly be considered a provocateur in this respect. Like his equally famous still lifes, the series of nude pictures is peppered with motifs from the advertising industry and its associated aesthetics: Cigarettes, spirits, posters, interiors, various foods and the regularly recurring orange run through his paintings just as often as stars-and-stripes colours and shapes.

In the 1980s, Wesselmann devoted himself to the production of metal figures using laser technology. As a basis for these works, he used his motifs, which had already been very successful by then. His oeuvre also includes various assemblages. Wesselmann studied at Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in New York after his military service from 1952 to 1954 in the Korean War, graduating in 1959. He was already moving in the circles of the avant-garde New York art scene.

In the same year, he founded the Judson Gallery in the basement of the Judson Memorial Church together with Jim Dine, Marc Ratliff and Claes Oldenburg, which became a central meeting place for the avant-garde. Wesselmann died in 2004 at the age of 73.  Wesslemann's life's work was honoured with a retrospective in 1994, which was shown in ten different European cities. Meanwhile, his No. 98  from the Great American Nude series (#98, 1967) belongs to the collection of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, while the Museum of Modern Art in New York City holds a large part of his work.

Der Künstler Tom Wesselmann

  • Einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der US-amerikanischen Pop-Art.
  • Great American Nude Serie ist seine erfolgreichste Arbeit.
  • Great American Nude #98 (1967) befindet sich im Kölner Museum Ludwig.

Tom Wesselmann, geb. 23.02.1931 in Cincinnati, Ohio, gest.
