The artist Christo

  • Strictly spoken, Christo is the pseudonym for the married couple Jeanne-Claude and Christo.
  • Christo's wrapped elements made the couple famous across generations.
  • The two were a couple for 51 years until Jeanne-Claude's death.

The couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude, working under the pseudonym Christo, have been remembered for their spectacular wrappings even by people who may not have seen or experienced the elaborate art projects themselves - the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin in 1995, for example, has certainly manifested itself in the memory of several generations. Their artistic fusion and the temporary availability of their work made the two become the phenomenon Christo.

Christo Vladimirov Yavashev (1935 - 2020) and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935 - 2009) met in Paris in 1958 - in 1961 they prepared their first joint work of art: after their proposal was rejected by the authorities, the couple blocked Rue de Visconti in downtown Paris with 89 oil barrels (The Iron Curtain) on 27 June 1962 in reference to the construction of the Berlin Wall. In 1964, the couple moved to New York and initially stayed in the country illegally - it was not until three years later that they received the green card necessary for permanent residence.

Although Christo's works, which began to accumulate in 1968, consisted largely of wrapping and packaging, Yavashev himself vehemently rejected the term »packaging art« in an interview with Stern in 2019, saying that it did not do justice to his art because the works were extremely diverse. What all the projects have in common, however, is that they are all made of fabrics and materials that underline their fragile, ephemeral character.

The fact that he always refrained from using a chair while working for fear of becoming lazy and that he did not eat anything after his breakfast of yoghurt and raw garlic all day long in order to feel more energetic, are themes he used in an interview a year before his death to serve precisely the bizarre stereotype that outsiders like to imagine of an internationally successful artist. Although Denat de Guillebon took over quite a large part of the work with the coordination and realisation of the joint projects, it was usually rather in the background in public. The two were a couple for 51 years until Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon's unexpected death in 2009.
