The artist Josef Albers

  • US-American-German artist and art educator of concrete art.
  • Was deputy director of the State Bauhaus until 1933.
  • In 1976, he founded the non-profit The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, which still exists today.

Josef Albers, born 19 March 1888 in Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, died 25 March 1976 in New Haven, Connecticut, was a US-German painter of concrete art as well as an art theorist and educator. Alber's abstract art illustrates his meticulous examination of the interaction of colours and forms as well as their cognitive perception by the viewer - this theoretical approach makes him a classical representative of concrete art. In contrast, he created optical illusions based on geometry, which also makes him, together with Victor Vasarely, a pioneer of Op Art. His Hommage to the Square, a series of oil paintings of differently coloured squares from the 1950s, on the other hand, makes greater use of the hard edge.

Albers' professional turn to art came at the beginning of the 1910s, when he worked as an elementary school teacher: from 1913 he attended the Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin and was inspired right at the start by Piet Mondrian's works for his first abstract painting. Between 1916 and 1919 he was enrolled at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Essen. He then went to the art academy in Munich for a year, with Franz von Stuck as his teacher. His comprehensive art education finally paved the way for him to take a preliminary course at the State Bauhaus in Weimar, which he completed in 1920 with Johannes Itten - the latter laid the foundation for Albers' final focus on abstract art. Albers taught at the Bauhaus for a long time, including under Walter Gropius himself.

He continued to teach at the Bauhaus even after the art school moved to Dessau and was deputy director there until it was closed by the National Socialists in 1933. With Hitler's seizure of power, Albers fled to the USA and resumed his teaching work at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. His students included Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd and Kenneth Noland. He became a US citizen in 1939. It was not until 1950 that he changed his chair to Yale University in New Haven, where he headed the Art Department until 1959. After the war was over, he accepted a teaching position in Germany again for the first time: a guest professorship at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm.

In 1958 Albers was awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. Other honours and prizes he received include the Grand Prize of the Third Bienal Americana Grabado in Santiago (1968) and the Grand Prize for Painting of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (1968). In 1970 he was made an honorary citizen of his birthplace Bottrop. In 1971, Albers and his wife founded The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation, a non-profit organisation that still exists today. He died in 1976 shortly after his 88th birthday.

Der Künstler Josef Albers

  • US-amerikanisch-deutscher Künstler und Kunstpädagoge der konkreten Kunst.
  • Bis 1933 stellvertretender Leiter des Staatlichen Bauhauses.
  • Gründete 1976 die bis heute existierende gemeinnützige The Josef & Anni Albers Foundation.

Josef Albers, 19.03.1888 in Bottrop, Nordrhein-Westfalen, gest. 25.

Geburtstag.
