The artist Raymond Pettibon

  • Contemporary US artist.
  • Known for his works combining stylised ink drawings or iconography with texts.
  • Married to the artist Aïda Ruilova.

US artist Raymond Pettibon was originally born Raymond Ginn on 16 June 1957 in Tucson, Arizona, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 1977 after studying economics. A year later, through his older brother's record company, he started publishing artist's notebooks and became known in the Southern Californian punk rock scene in the early 1980s for designing posters and record covers for music groups on the same record company. In particular, covers and flyers for the punk bands Black Flag and Firehose increasingly raised his profile and he adopted his stage name, Pettibon. This derives from the nickname petit bon, which his father had given him.

During this period, his works were shown in the first group exhibitions, and in 1986 his first solo exhibition was held in New York. In 1990, Pettibon designed both the record cover and the booklet of the album Goo by the band Sonic Youth and thus provided motifs for a large number of T-shirts and posters. As the 1990s progressed, Pettibon's work was exhibited first nationally, then internationally, including at the Whitney Biennial (New York City), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Kunsthaus (Zurich) and Tramway arts centre (Glasgow).

In 2001 he was awarded the Wolfgang Hahn Prize, followed by participation in Documenta 11 in Kassel (2002) and other awards, including the Bucksbaum Award of the Whitney Biennial and the Oskar Kokoschka Prize of the Austrian Federal Government. In 2013, he designed a billboard for New York's High Line that depicted a 2010 baseball drawing titled No Title (Safe he called ...) and baseball player Jackie Robinson.

In 2017, a retrospective of his work entitled A Pen of All Work was shown at the New Museum (New York City). His work can now be found in the collections of various galleries and museums, including the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art (New York City) and the Tate Gallery of Modern Art (London). Raymond Pettibon is married to the artist Aïda Ruilova and lives both in Hermosa Beach (Los Angeles) and New York.

Raymond Pettibon is considered a self-taught artist who claims to have been strongly influenced by the work of artists William Blake, Edward Hopper and Francisco de Goya. He became known for his stylised ink drawings as well as his use of US iconography drawn from literature, art history, philosophy and religion, politics, sports and sexuality. His comic-like drawings contain both image and text, the latter often formulated in a disturbing, ironic or ambiguous manner and primarily aimed at exercising cultural criticism.

At the beginning of his career, Pettibon worked mainly with ink on paper, and many of his early drawings were also in black and white. Only occasionally did he add colour with the help of pencils, watercolours and acrylics, collages or gouache. In the mid-1980s, he increasingly made collages using simple newspaper prints. In addition to his works on paper, Pettibon also created animations and live-action films from his drawings, as well as fanzines, prints and large murals. The latter often included an arrangement of his own works on paper, so that the paintings almost seemed like installations created from collages.

2017 wurde im New Museum (New York City) eine Retrospektive seiner Arbeiten mit dem Titel A Pen of All Work gezeigt.
