The artist Peter Beard

  • Contemporary US photographer.
  • Mainly known for his documentary wildlife photographs, but also made collages.
  • Author of »The End of the Game« - a groundbreaking book in the field of wildlife photography.

Born in New York City on 22 January 1938, the US photographer Peter Beard wrote diaries and already attached photos to his entries as a child. From 1957 to 1961, he studied art history at Yale University, learning from greats such as Josef Albers, Richard Lindner, Neil Welliver and Vincent Scully. After graduating, he travelled to Kenya. There he photographed and documented the deaths of around 35,000 elephants and other wild animals in Tsavo National Park. These photographs were later used to produce what is probably his best-known publication, »The End of the Game«, known in Germany and Switzerland as Die letzte Jagd. The illustrated book, which is now issued many times, caused a scandal when it was published in 1965 due to the cruelty of the images.

In addition to Kenya, Beard travelled to many other African countries during his lifetime, including Botswana, Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa and Uganda, and thus found in the continent the central theme of his photography, in which he mainly dealt with the extermination of wildlife by man. His photographs and collages are characterised by the combination of photography with daily diary entries. His works also often include newspaper clippings, dried leaves, insects, old photos in sepia tone and the integration of animal blood as well as Beard's own blood as a colour medium.

In addition to wildlife photography, he made a name for himself with his portrait photos, including shots of David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Veruschka Gräfin von Lehndorff and the supermodel Iman in his portfolio. Beard photographed the latter in Nairobi in 1975 and thus helped her to international success. He was also repeatedly engaged as a photographer for fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle and worked with artists such as Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon in the course of his career. Until his death, he lived and worked in Montauk (New York) and on a ranch near Nairobi, which he had bought in 1961 near the farm of his friend, the writer Karen Blixen. After Peter Beard, who suffered from dementia, was considered missing for three weeks, he was found dead in a nature reserve near Montauk on 19 April 2020. The cause of death is unclear.

Groundbreaking exhibitions of his work were held at the International Center of Photography (New York City) in 1977 and at the Centre national de la photographie (Paris) in 1997. They were followed by exhibitions in Berlin, London, Madrid, Milan, Tokyo, Toronto and Vienna. Together with his third wife, Nejma Beard, he founded the Peter Beard Studio in 2000, whose archives include published and unpublished written and visual material. In May 2008, he shot the photos for the Pirelli calendar in the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
